ICTY Reverses Conviction for Genocide

The Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia reversed the conviction of Bosnian Serb Officer Vidoje Blagojević for complicity in genocide, affirmed his other convictions, and reduced his sentence to 15 years imprisonment.

The Chamber also affirmed the convictions of Bosnian Serb Officer Dragan Jokić and his sentence of 9 years imprisonment.

Serbia to Lead Council of Europe

This week, Serbia is is scheduled to assume chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s executive body.  Human Rights Watch and other organizations have objected, pointing to Serbia’s human rights record.

UN Secretary-General Applauds Sudan-Chad Agreement

In a statement released May 3, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed a bilateral agreement signed by Sudan and Chad.  The agreement to regularize relations between the two countries was facilitated by the King of Saudi Arabia.  It is hoped that the agreement will help eradicate conflict in the Darfur region and in Eastern Chad.

European Union Peacekeepers Raid Home of Suspected Supporter of War Crimes Fugitive

VOA News reports that EU peacekeeping troops raided the home of a suspected supporter of war crimes fugitive Radovan Karadzic at the request of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. He and Ratko Mladic are considered to be the ICTY’s two most wanted suspects.

ICC Issues Two Arrest Warrants in Darfur Crisis

On May 2, Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes against two Sudanese officials for their respective roles in the Darfur crisis. The two men are Ahmad Muhammad Harun, the current Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, and Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-al-Rahman, a leader of the janjaweed militia.

UN Security Council Extends UN Mission to Sudan

Expressing “grave concern” over the continued attacks on civilians and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Darfur region of Sudan, the UN Security Council has extended by six months the UN mission in southern Sudan. The Security Council has urged the Secretary General to appoint a chief envoy to lead the force. The resolution extending the mission also condemns the continued attacks on civilians and calls for an end to the atrocities occurring in the region.

Venezuela Exits World Bank, IMF

Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela, announced yesterday that the nation is withdrawing from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Venezuela recently paid off its debt to the World Bank, five years ahead of schedule. Its IMF debt has been paid off since 1999, and that institution has already closed its offices in the country. The withdrawals are considered a symbolic measure on the part of Chavez, who has been vocal in his opposition to Latin American reliance on Washington.
